Anyone Can Say “Quality Installation.” Here’s Ours, Written Down.

The specification our crews install to, and our inspector signs against — step by step, with the failure each step prevents.

Window installation is the only part of this purchase you can't inspect after the fact.

The product arrives with a label on it — you can read the ratings, compare the lines, check the warranty. But the installation gets covered by trim the same day it's performed. Flashing, sill pan, shimming, fastener spacing, air sealing: all of it disappears behind casing and caulk within hours. Six months later, when a room is drafty or a sash won't hold position, you have no way to look at what was actually done.

That's why nearly every early problem with replacement windows traces to installation rather than the window. And it's why "we're known for quality installation" is the emptiest sentence in this industry — it's a claim made precisely where the customer has the least ability to verify it.

So we wrote ours down.

Below is the specification our crews install to and our inspector signs against. It's not marketing language. It's the actual sequence, with the reason each step exists. Read it, bring it to your consultation, and ask any other contractor you're considering to show you theirs.

First, though, here's what happens between signing and install day — because quality control starts long before anyone shows up with tools.

Part One: From Signing to Install Day

Our quality control team touches your project three separate times: at the measure, when your product arrives, and at the final inspection. That's the part most companies don't do. A single walkthrough at the end can only catch what's still fixable at the end. Catching a measurement error before the order goes out, or a manufacturing defect before it's in your wall, is the difference between a correction and a callback.

Signing — deposit of 20–40%

We collect 20% to 40% at contract signing, whether you’re paying cash or financing. Nothing is ordered before that, because nothing can be — every unit is built specifically for your openings and your selections, and it has no resale value to anyone else. We publish that range rather than making you ask. A reasonable deposit on custom-manufactured product is normal and expected; a contractor demanding most of the project cost before anything is manufactured is not.

Final measure — within one week of signing

You’ll schedule an appointment with one of our quality control measuring professionals, who comes out within a week of signing and takes exact measurements of every window and door in the project. This is a separate visit from your estimate, and it’s deliberate: the consultation measurement is for pricing, this one is for manufacturing.

Into production — your order goes to ProVia

Those measurements go to ProVia, who builds each window and door to your exact openings with the selections you made — line, glass package, color, hardware, grille pattern, and hardware finish. Nothing comes off a shelf.

During production — 6 to 8 weeks, with prep communications

You’ll hear from us throughout production, not just at the end. Those communications walk you through what needs to happen in the house before our crews arrive: clearing pictures, mirrors, and furniture near each opening, making a plan for pets on install days, and clearing sills, blinds, and hardware.

Arrival — quality control checks the product before you see it

When your order arrives, quality control inspects it against the specification and the measurements we sent — correct line, glass package, sizes, hardware, no shipping damage. If something came in wrong, we find it in our warehouse rather than in your wall.

Scheduling — you pick the install days

Once product clears inspection, you’re invited to schedule your installation. Most projects run one to three days depending on how many openings you have and how accessible they are.

Reminders — the day before, and the morning of

You’ll get a reminder the day before, and another the morning of the install with when the team will arrive. No sitting by a window wondering.

Install day — and the Sign-Off

Our crews install to the written standard below. Before the job is called complete, you’ll meet the Aspen Bravo quality control professional who inspects the installation against that standard — the third and final QC checkpoint on your project.

Part Two: The Standard

Before anything comes out of the wall

Every opening is measured at multiple points, not once. Width gets measured at the top, middle, and bottom; height at the left, center, and right. Then we check the diagonals. Older homes settle, and an opening that reads 34 inches at the top can read 33½ at the sill. We order to the controlling dimension.

Why it matters: A unit ordered to a single measurement in an out-of-square opening either won’t fit or gets forced in — and a forced frame is a bowed frame. Bowed frames bind sashes, stress seals, and fail early. A remeasure costs an afternoon; a wrong-size custom order costs six to eight weeks, because the replacement has to be built from scratch.

Product is verified against the order before install day. Line, glass package, color, hardware, handing, and count — checked against what you signed, not against what showed up.

Why it matters: This is where a quote quietly becomes a different product. Checking it at delivery means a discrepancy is our problem to solve, not a surprise you discover after it’s in the wall.

Opening the wall

Old units come out without damaging the surrounding envelope. Cutting corners on removal transfers cost to the repair.

Every opening gets inspected before the new unit goes near it. Sill, jamb, and header are checked for rot, insect damage, prior water intrusion, and out-of-square conditions.

If we find structural damage, work stops. We photograph it, show you the condition in person, and get your written approval — with pricing you were told about up front — before anything proceeds.

Why it matters: Framing damage is the single most common source of surprise cost on a window project, and it genuinely can’t be seen until the old unit is out. The problem isn’t that it happens. The problem is contractors who quote low knowing they’ll find something, then present it as a change order on day one when you have a hole in your wall and no leverage. Stopping and documenting is the difference.

Preparing the opening

The substrate is cleaned and dried before anything is sealed to it. Sealant applied over dust, old caulk residue, or damp wood does not bond. It looks identical on day one and fails in year two.

A sloped sill pan goes in on every applicable installation. The sill is prepared so that any water reaching it drains back out rather than sitting.

Why it matters: This is the single most-skipped step in residential window installation, and it’s the one that causes the expensive failures. Every window assembly will admit some water over its life — wind-driven rain finds its way past even a perfect exterior seal. A correctly built installation assumes that and gives the water a path out. A barrier-only installation assumes it won’t happen, and when it does, the water has nowhere to go but into the framing. You cannot see whether this was done once trim is on.

Flashing integrates with the existing weather-resistive barrier in the correct shingle-lap order bottom up, each layer overlapping the one below, so gravity carries water out of the assembly rather than into it.

Why it matters: Flashing installed in the wrong order is worse than no flashing. It creates a funnel that directs water into the wall cavity and concentrates it at a single point.

Setting the unit

Square, level, and plumb, verified with instruments — not by eye. Diagonals are re-checked after the unit is set.

Shims go at every fastening point. The frame is supported where it’s fastened so that tightening a screw can’t draw the frame out of plane.

Why it matters: This is the quiet one. An unshimmed frame bows a fraction of an inch when it’s fastened — invisible to the eye, plainly visible to the sash. It’s why a brand-new window is hard to operate, why a lock needs a shoulder behind it, and why an insulated glass seal fails years before it should. Most of the "the window is defective" complaints we’re called about on other companies’ work turn out to be a shimming problem, not a product problem.

Fasteners follow the manufacturer’s schedule specified type, specified spacing, specified penetration into structure.

Why it matters: Manufacturers set fastening schedules because they’ve tested the assembly. Deviating from it can also void the product warranty, which means a cut corner on install day can quietly cost you the coverage you paid for.

Sealing and insulating

Low-expansion foam only. Standard high-expansion foam in a window perimeter is one of the most common and most damaging shortcuts in the trade.

Why it matters: High-expansion foam keeps expanding after it’s placed. In a window perimeter it bows the frame from the outside in — the same failure as bad shimming, arriving a few hours later. The wrong product actively wrecks the installation.

The full perimeter is air-sealed, inside and out. The gap between frame and rough opening is insulated and sealed continuously, not spot-hit at the corners.

Why it matters: An ENERGY STAR-rated window in an unsealed opening performs like a cheap window. The rating on the label is a lab result for the unit; whether you get it depends entirely on the perimeter. This is the step that determines whether the efficiency you paid for shows up on your bill.

Exterior sealant joints are tooled to the correct geometry right joint width and depth, correct backing, tooled to bond both faces.

Why it matters: A sealant bead is a moving joint, not glue. Wrong geometry means it tears from thermal movement within a few seasons. Tooled correctly, it flexes for the life of the installation.

Finishing and testing

Every sash is operated before we call it done. Open, close, lock, unlock — and it has to work with one hand. Weep holes are confirmed clear.

Why it matters: One-handed operation isn’t a nicety. It’s the field test for whether the frame is true. If a sash needs two hands or a shoulder, something upstream is wrong, and we’d rather find it while we’re standing there than have you find it in February.

Interior and exterior trim, caulk, and finish work are completed to a paint-ready standard.

The site is cleaned daily, not just at the end. You’re living in the house while we work.

Part Three: The Sign-Off

Every installation is inspected and signed off by an Aspen Bravo quality control inspector before it's called complete.

Here's the part that matters: the inspector doesn't work for the crew. They're an Aspen Bravo employee, they inspect against the written standard above, and they have the authority to stop a job. Depending on the market and the project, your installation may be performed by an Aspen Bravo crew or by a vetted local partner — that varies. The sign-off doesn't.

If something doesn't meet the standard, it gets corrected before the crew leaves your property. Not scheduled for a callback. Not "we'll send someone out next week." Before they leave, while the tools and the materials and the people are still there.

That timing is the whole point. Every window company will eventually come fix a problem you report. The difference is who finds it — and a problem found on install day costs an hour, while the same problem found by a homeowner in February costs a callback, a repair, and your confidence.

  5. What happens if the inspection finds a problem? Fixed on the spot, or scheduled?
  6. Who holds the workmanship warranty?
